THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME
The peppered moth is a nocturnal moth with a remarkable story shaped by pollution and a random mutation.
The moth’s black-and-white pattern originally made it perfectly adapted to the appearance of birch trees, protecting it from predators during the day through camouflage. With the onset of industrialization (at the end of the 18th century), energy consumption rose sharply, and factories and coal-fired power plants emitted enormous amounts of soot and smoke. The consequences were immense: The air became polluted, and nature was covered by a dark veil. The lichens on the birch trees died, and the bark became blackened with soot. As a result, the peppered moth suddenly became visible on the blackened bark and was no longer safe from birds and other predators.
However, this was not the end of the peppered moth. A random mutation increased its melanin content, turning the moth dark. This change proved highly beneficial in the soot-filled environment, and from then on, the black moth variants once again blended into the soot-covered trees. In fact, black peppered moths soon became far more common in industrialized areas than their white-and-black-speckled counterparts. To this day, both variants occur in nature.
The story of the peppered moth proves that all our actions and decisions have consequences. That is why we think through our products in the smallest detail, from production to disposal, and design them in harmony with nature.
